100 Questions for Webmasters

To kick off the hard launch of my website, I thought doing a little questionnaire would be fun! I found this blank version from MOUSEcky.


1. Please introduce yourself.
My name is Myth. I use she/they pronouns. And I'm a hobbyist artist.
2. How long have you been making websites?
I started since early 2023. I made a company website using Wordpress during my internship back then. I only started making my own personal website back in August 2024.
3. And what got you into the hobby?
I stumbled upon a video by LuvstarKei titled "Why YOU Should Make a Website!" and I felt inspired to make my own website.
4. What kind of website are you most interested in?
Anything artistic, especially digital art.
5. What's your workflow? Do you plan your websites out thoroughly or do you come up with the design as you go along?
I tried planning stuff at first, but turns out I work better when I just start building.
6. Please link to your biggest inspirations.
First one I thought of is Corvidae. This was the first site that I discovered that showcased plurality. It just stuck with me and I keep coming back to their site. Another is Ne0nbandit. Just... WOW! Such a cool site! Lastly, Luvstarkei for giving me that push to create a website.
7. What's your favourite part about making websites?
Customizing my pages however I want it to look like without limitations.
8. And the thing you struggle with the most?
Making interesting layout.
9. Do you keep the same layout on all of your pages? Or do you use different ones?
Moslty the same layout. Maybe one day I'll try different ones.
10. How confident are you with CSS?
I'm not confident in anything coding...
11. Do you know how to correctly use <dl>?
This is my first time seeing that tag.
12. What is your favourite HTML element?
The <p>.
13. If you're making a new web page from scratch, what is the first thing you do?
I write the content first. Then I go with the flow when it comes to the design.
14. Do you know JavaScript?
No... Get it away from me...
15. How about PHP?
Huh?
16. Does your website have a theme that you stick to?
Yes, it does.
17. Are you more focused on content or design?
I focus more on content.
18. Do you own a domain name? If not, would you ever want to?
I do!
19. What do you think of nostalgia-focused or "retro" websites?
I think they're neat!
20. Is your HTML valid? Do you even check?
Honestly I didn't know you can check it. I most likely will do it at some point.
21. What are your opinion on buttons and banners?
I think they're cool.
22. What do you think of button walls in particular?
Super cool. I love browsing them.
23. If you started over again, would you make something similar or completely different?
I'm not sure. I think I would make something similar still.
24. Are you envious of other people's websites?
Sometimes.
25. What text editor do you use?
Visual Studio Code.
26. Why do you use that one?
Has autofill. Also Github desktop.
27. Do you host your image files on your web server, or on another host?
On my web server.
28. This might not be relevant to you, but what's your opinion on the Neocities vs. Nekoweb debate?
I'm not really aware of it as I've been in my own corner.
29. How much server space would you estimate your main website takes up?
I think it might take up to 1GB...? I'm really lowballing here...
30. Do you keep local backups of your files?
Yes.
31. Do you prefer simple or highly visual websites?
I prefer simple.
32. Do you stick to certain colours? Do you do that on purpose, or is it your subconscious?
I stick to blue and purple, black and white. I do it on purpose.
33. Have you ever thought about quitting? Why?
NOPE. I'm already too deep into this to quit. This has become another habit/hobby.
34. Do you have many webmaster friends, or is it a solitary hobby?
Solitary... for now, maybe? We'll see.
35. Do people in your real life know about your website?
They know I'm working on it, but they don't know that it has launched.
36. Do you update your website very often? How often is "very often"?
I update my website daily when I'm in the mood to code. Then I'd leave it for weeks or months. Since I bought a domain though I've been updating it daily when I can.
37. And the overall design, do you change that much? Why or why not?
I don't change it much because I like it.
38. Is your website more you-focused, hobby-focused, or outside world-focused?
I don't know actually... perhaps more me(us)-focused and hobby-focused.
39. Do you do web design professionally?
No.
40. If not, would you like to? And if you're comfortable answering, what do you do for work?
I'm not sure. As for work, I'm a freelance layout designer and proofreader for medical manuscripts.
41. Do you communicate with people by email very much?
No, not really.
42. Some people reject social media and use websites as a replacement. Do you keep social media outside of your website?
Yes... but I wish I could reject them fully...
43. How about instant messengers? Do you use a mainstream one like Discord or Telegram? Or something like Matrix? Do you avoid them?
I use Discord, WhatsApp, and LINE.
44. Do you listen to music while you work on websites? If so, what kinds of artists?
I used to listen to DanAndPhilBEATS on loop, but now I play YouTube videos in the background.
45. Do you keep everything you make on one website, or do you have more than one?
I made two websites. The first one is professional, while this one is a hobby site.
46. On a similar note, do you keep to one topic on your site, or many?
Quite many I suppose.
47. Do you present your real self, or at least try? Or do you construct a persona on purpose?
I present my real self. At least I try to.
48. Have you ever made a good friend thanks to your website?
Not yet perhaps.
49. Are you happy with the way HTML and CSS currently work?
Yes!
50. What are practices that you think people should avoid?
I think the div soup.
51. What about under-utilised practices, or things you think people should do more?
Making semantic code.
52. Do you use a lot of semantic HTML? Or are you guilty of generic structure?
I try to use semantic. I usually dislike not having it semantic as I was drilled by a certain tutorial to make HTML semantic or else.
53. Do you consider different browsers?
Not really...
54. Speaking of, what's your preferred browser? Convince your readers why they should use it.
I've been focused on Firefox. You can customize your browser with animated themes. I have mine as deep space with twinkling stars.
55. And what OS are you on?
Windows. Ugh. I know.
56. Do you have a strong opinion on that, or do you just happen to use it?
I want to try Linux, but I haven't gone around to doing it yet.
57. Are your websites mobile-friendly?
Yes.
58. What are your thoughts on autoplay?
Not fun when my speakers are on blast.
59. What are your thoughts on webrings? Are you in any?
I think they're cool. And no, not yet...
60. Do you have any web shrines? What do you like to see in that sort of page?
I really want to make one but no I don't have any at the moment. I would love to make a Yae Miko shrine.
61. Are your websites "cliche", in your opinion?
No.
62. What is your ideal website? Are you striving for that, or for something else?
My ideal is technically hard to build and will take so, so long. And I am still striving for it.
63. Are you an artist? Do you draw or design your own assets?
Yes! And yes, I do make my own asset sometimes.
64. What are your favourite resource sites?
I listed them in my Resources page.
65. Is there a habit you just can't get away from no matter how hard you try?
Coding for hours without breaks.
66. What's your biggest advice for a new webmaster?
Get the basics and look up documentation.
67. Do you keep all your styling in CSS? Or do you hard-code some?
In CSS.
68. What do you think of frameset layouts?
What's that?
69. How about table-based layouts?
No comment.
70. Do you subscribe to the ideas of "one-column", "two-column" and "three-column" layouts? Do you use any of these?
Not really.
71. Do you spend longer on the HTML or the CSS?
CSS for sure.
72. Have you ever made a page with no CSS? It's useful for your thoughts.
I don't think I have.
73. Do you ever find yourself making layouts with nothing to put on them? Or do you only make layouts when the need arises?
I only make it when the need arises.
74. Would you consider yourself a beginner? Or advanced? Somewhere in the middle?
Even though I'm a year into this, I still consider myself a beginner.
75. Do you have a habit of looking at the source code of websites you visit?
Sometimes I do it.
76. How did YOU learn how to make websites?
I started with Neocities tutorial, then branched off to HTML Dog's tutorial. I reached all the way to Javascript Beginner Tutorial but stopped there because my brain struggles to get the concepts to stick... And also a lot of trial and error and rubber ducking with my Totoro plush.
77. Do you ever force elements to do things they're not supposed to?
No, I don't think so.
78. Thoughts on floating elements?
I use them on like one image. That's it. I think they're good for image placement.
79. When you're sizing stuff, what do you use first? Do you use px, em, %, or something else?
I used to use a lot of ems but now I use px.
80. Do you have a favourite font?
Times New Roman. I don't know why but any other font kills my motivation to write...
81. Would you run a website with another person? How would that work?
I don't think so.
82. Do you surf the Web to find new personal websites very often?
I occassionally do.
83. Do you bookmark other people's websites? How would you feel knowing someone else bookmarked yours?
Yes, I do bookmark other people's website! I think I would feel flattered that my website got bookmarked.
84. What do you want people to be most impressed with when they see your website?
The duality of my website.
85. Are you interested in technology outside of websites? Do you collect?
I'm neutral about it.
86. How often and for how long are you online?
You don't wanna know... (24/7)
87. When it comes to your website, who is your target audience?
Other plural folks! And also artists!
88. Have you ever been interested in XHTML?
What's that?
89. Do you program in general? Have you ever written a program for use with or on your website, not counting simple JavaScript?
Nope.
90. Speaking of programs that help you make websites, what do you think of static site generators (SSGs)? Have you ever used one?
No, I've never used one.
91. Do you keep a hitcounter? Why or why not?
Not yet I suppose.
92. Do you frequent forums? Which ones?
I am semi-active in the Flight Rising forums!
93. Do you write your page content directly into the editor, or do you prepare it elsewhere, like a text document or a Word document?
It depends on the content. For anything that requires discretion in sharing, I write it in Obsidian first then check if I feel okay with sharing what I wrote. For this questionnaire I'm writing it directly into the editor!
94. Do you think you appear cool to others? A more accurate answer now: do other people ever say you're cool?
No. All the time.
95. Are you embarrassed of your old work? Have you ever deleted everything out of shame?
Embarrassed? Not really. Delete everything? I think I did. I don't remember.
96. Would you close down your website if you couldn't update it, or would you leave an archive?
Archive all the way!
97. Do you reveal a lot about yourself on your website? Or are you more secretive?
I can't help but reveal a lot up to a certain point. I don't reveal any sensitive information obviously and I make sure that everything is double, triple, and quadruple checked. At least for me. The other parts may differ.
98. Are you willing to reveal who your best online friend is, and/or if they have a website?
I don't have any (I'm very shy...).
99. And do you optimise the images on your website?
Yes. I try to.
100. We're out of time! How do you feel after answering 100 questions? ....other than exhausted.
I feel excited! I had fun filling this out and I also learned a few new things that I didn't know before!
